Why no-income-tax states tie
When a state has no wage income tax, take-home pay is driven by the same federal income tax and FICA assumptions. Property tax, sales tax, and cost of living can still change the real budget.
Local taxes can matter
Pennsylvania and Kentucky can have local wage taxes that are not included in this map. New York City and Yonkers taxes are also excluded. Use the full answer page caveats before making relocation or job-offer decisions.
Exact paychecks need inputs
Health insurance, 401(k), HSA, filing status, dependents, and additional withholding can change your deposit. Use the paycheck calculator for a custom estimate.
Updated 2026 methodology
CalculWise uses the 2026 federal standard deduction for a single filer, progressive federal income tax brackets, 6.2% Social Security tax up to the annual wage base, and 1.45% Medicare tax. State rows only appear here when the model is documented: no state wage income tax, flat-rate state income tax, or a progressive state model with published tables. Each linked answer page shows the full breakdown and caveats.
